Reaction to The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston

"The Woman Warrior" takes us through the experience of a Chinese woman in the 1970's. Back then, it was a harsh and unfair world for women as they are seen as inferior and unimportant in the eyes of the Chinese. Women are meant to give birth, take care of children and work at home. They do not bring honor or pride to their own families because once they are married, they belong to the family of their husbands. Aside from the discrimination from her family and people, the persona also experiences racism as an immigrant in America.

This essay may have been written in the 1970's but many of what the persona experienced then are still present in our society. Just a few years back, China implemented the one child policy. This caused a lot of parents to throw away or kill their newborn daughters because if they can only have one child, they would rather have a son. This is because a son will carry the family name when he marries while a daughter will not.
As a Chinese woman myself, I can say that the views of the world have greatly changed since that time and people are more accepting and fair now. Women have proven to be just as capable and intelligent as men and  can therefore be seen as equals. I'm glad that the persona's fight for independence and justice then has paid of now through the efforts many. It goes to show that if different peoples come together, there is hope for a more just and accepting world for all kinds of people.
