Horror movies are meant to be exactly what its name suggest, horrible and horrifying, but with an artistic twist. Why then do people love watching them so much? Horror movies are dark, twisted realities of everyday life. They seem to be perfect outlets for the insane creations of our minds.
Stephen King, a horror writer himself, suggests that everyone is mentally ill. There is something in all of us that can be considered insane. This insanity can be proven simply by the fact that many willingly subject themselves to the horrors of horror movies, and enjoy. One reason people enjoy watching horror films is the thrill of being able to show that they can in fact sit through the movies. Whether on a dare, or simply to have fun, we crave for the chills and shocks those movies bring. Another reason could be that our deepest, darkest emotions are realized in those films. They help us let loose of our inhibitions because all the scary things we can possibly imagine are shared to the world around us. Watching those movies can also have a therapeutic side. Many people feel that since they have seen what could happen in the films, they no longer have the urge to see it happen in real life. That i think is beneficial to society.
The reasons provided by King are logical and reasonable but they definitely do not apply to all. I for one do not enjoy horror movies at the least. But horror movies will always be around and movie makers will keep trying to make movies scarier than the one before. That way, people will always have the thrill they feel when watching a horror film.
