Reaction to Out of Africa

From the first sentence to the very last, what captures my attention are the vivid descriptions of mysterious and unknown Africa. The author put meticulous details and vibrant images as he describes his surroundings, the tribes and practices of the natives, and his own thoughts and opinions of Africa and its slow progress towards modernization. However, past the descriptions of the text, what struck me the most was the love for Africa even though it was not the author's homeland.

It is very clear in the text that Africa was a beloved country to the author. The author showed a sense of reverence for the practices and native culture of the Africans, but at the same time, he was able to influence the natives with some of his own culture and practices. We often see blends of various cultures in our globalized world. This text shows how one can keep his own culture while opening up another's which often leads to progress.
