Reaction to Happy Feet: The Pleasures of Teen Dance Movies by Joan Acocella

'Happy Feet' is definitely an eye opener for me. While reading this essay, I realized that I have only heard but never watched a single film mentioned in the text, not even 'Happy Feet'. As a reader without any prior knowledge of the films mentioned, I felt the author was able to convince me to watch them. She was able to discuss various aspects of the movies, including the casting and editing of the films, their similarities and differences with one another, and give insights that went beyond dance and the movies themselves. Without a doubt, nothing is always as it seems, and dance movies, which seem shallow to many, do impart messages and lessons that people need in life. This is what struck me most about the essay.

The author discussed discrimination, social hierarchy and other social problems that keep the main characters from achieving their goals. Indeed, these are mere reflections of society, but on the positive note, the characters in these movies inspire and set examples for real people with real problems in real life. Dance is just one of many passions that people have in life. Looking deeper, dance can be substituted with almost all desires, goals, abilities and talents people have. Recognizing this, the author made it a point to discuss the bravery and riskiness of the characters in the movies.

Despite all odds, the heroes and heroines of these movies are able to succeed in life through their perseverance, determination and focus. Therefore, these movies do inspire people who can relate to the characters' plights, and they prove that ordinary people with extraordinary passion can achieve whatever they aspire for. Perhaps the fun and lively energy of these films, combined with the inspiration it brings to the audience, is what makes people love teen dance movies.
