This text is very interesting and informative. It seems to talk about two completely unrelated subjects, namely sexism and language; yet it opens my eyes to the hidden implications and subtle influences words have in our everyday lives. Although this text focuses mainly on American words and history, it can be assumed that other cultures have equivalent biases present in their languages since many languages come from the same root.
I have often wondered how our ancestors came up with the words we use now. I know they are arbitrary terms used to define but only now am I conscious of how ordinary words reflect on gender biases in history and in present society. The author relates how words used to describe men generally connote power, authority, and on a more negative note, violence. These words bring into mind human history and literature. Almost all wars, battles, adventures and anything else that bring glory and honor were done by men. Biologically, men do have more physical strength than most women, and strength was greatly valued throughout history.
On the other hand, words to describe women connote elegance, femininity, and passiveness. These qualities did not give women authority and respect in society. Rather, women are treated as inferior and powerless because of their natural maternal instinct. Unconsciously, people today use words that have hidden gender biases based on history so even though times have changed, discrimination between the sexes cannot be fully irradiated.
